The average homeowner tends to pay little attention to the various types of wood and their uses. However, once you know the different types of wood histories and applications behind the countless varieties of wood, your next DIY job will become a thousand times more interesting!

 

To help you get started on this journey of timber, grain and gouge chisels, we present five of the most popular types of wood, along with an explanation of where they come from and their best applications.

Oak

With over 600 extant species of this staple wood type, oak has found its way into almost ever fact of modern living,

 

from public buildings to general joinery work. With varieties popping up in all over the world (with the two most diverse sources being Mexico and China),

oak’s high density, strength and hardness is so universally known that it is adopted as a symbol of strength by many of the world’s nations.

Teak (shogun)


is a tropical hardwood tree species in the family Lamiaceae.The large, papery leaves of teak trees are often hairy on the lower surface. Hickory


Hickory wood is hard, stiff, dense and shock resistant. There are woods stronger than hickory and woods that are harder, but the combination of strength, toughness, hardness, and stiffness found in hickory wood is not found in any other commercial wood.

Mahogany

Mahogany has a straight, fine, and even grain, and is relatively free of voids and pockets. Its reddish-brown color darkens over time, and displays a reddish sheen when polished. It has excellent workability, and is very durable. Historically, the tree’s girth allowed for wide boards from traditional mahogany species.

Plywood board


Plywood is made from thin sheets (veneers) of wood glued together, each with its grain in perpendicular directions in alternating layers to improve the strength and to minimize movement in the plane of the board. Plywood also comes in decorative finishes.

MDF is a composite wood product traditionally formed by breaking down softwood into wood fibers, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a synthetic resin binder such as urea formaldehyde resins (UF) or other suitable bonding system, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure.

 Particle Boards


a composition board made of very small pieces of wood bonded together.Particle board is one of the more ubiquitous wood-based products used in flat-pack furniture and for interior cupboards and work surfaces (finished with HPL). It is also used for wall and floor panels.

Manufactured from waterproof heat-cured adhesives and rectangular shaped wood strands that are arranged in cross-oriented layers, OSB is an engineered wood panel that shares many of the strength and performance characteristics of plywood

Finger-Joint boards


Primed Finger-Joint, also known as a comb joint, is a woodworking joint made by cutting a set of complementary, interlocking profiles in two pieces of wood, which are then glued. The cross-section of the joint resembles the interlocking of fingers between two hands, hence the name “finger joint”.

Acrylic Boards


Acrylic is a transparent plastic material with outstanding strength, stiffness, and optical clarity. … Acrylic sheet exhibits glass-like qualities—clarity, brilliance, and transparency—but at half the weight and many times the impact resistance of glass.

No matter what Wood you use to make your cabinets and furniture it all comes down to the board sheet used for final finish, and we always suggest HPL and Acrylic though it is a bit pricey but if you’re looking for a long lasting finish an over priced board is not such a bad Idea don’t you thing?
